Triple axe murderer released in Dundee.

Triple axe murderer Thomas McCulloch ( seen in photo above on day release in Dundee) was freed from prison today after spending over 30 years behind bars. He was involved in the notorious breakout from Carstairs in 1976 with killer Robert Mone.

From The Courier....

" McCulloch murdered three men during a bloody break-out from Carstairs State Hospital with Dundee killer Robert Mone in 1976.

Hospital worker Neil McLellan, 46, and patient Iain Simpson were struck down by McCulloch with an axe.

McCulloch used the weapon to hack off Mr Simpson’s ears during the infamous break-out.

After making it over the perimeter fence, the duo also killed PC George Taylor, 27. While on the run, the pair maimed two workmen and held a family hostage.

McCulloch was initially sent to Carstairs State Mental Hospital in 1970 after attempting to kill two hotel workers over a row about a sandwich."

Both he and Mone were given life sentences after the break-out.

Despite being told they would die in jail, they used human rights laws to secure fixed sentences of 30 years, after which they would be eligible for parole."

Life was supposed to mean life in this case but as usual the European Court of Human Rights overruled UK Law and allowed him to go free.

The UK no longer has authority over sentencing.

  1. I always worry about the idea of curbing human rights legislation. I know that sometimes weird, sometime inconvenient, sometimes downright nutty decisions come from interpretation of human rights law, but I always think that, on the other side, can you imagine if the Tories were left in charge.

They talk about creating their own BRITISH HUMAN RIGHTS ACT!

    Snigger.

Given that they don't actually see people who didn't go to one of the great ENGLISH public schools as being human, I doubt there would be much in the way of rights for us.

Even now, a thieving bastard like Haddingsford or whatever he was called (the lord that stole tens of thousands of pounds from the taxpayer and went to prison for a couple of weeks, got back out and resumed his seat at £300 a day tax free) was treated incredibly differently from some of the kids who were peripherally engaged in the English riots of 2 years ago. Haddingfield got out because he was old and distressed to be in prison, under what, I suppose passes from human rights in England. These kids have had their futures blighted with criminal records, in one case because a guy who passed by after the rioting was over, and was thirsty, took two bottles of water (£2.50) from a wrecked shop. Life ruined. He'll never earn £300 a day, tax or no tax. He presumably has no rights. He's not a lord. And Haddingthief was one of hundreds of upper class tw*ts who were treated even more lightly than he was.

I feel that everything in Britain (although I'd agree less in Scotland) is governed by the station of life into which you were born, and the accent you carry with you. I'm glad to have some people who are not Old School Ties, arbitrating even given the aforementioned flaws in the system (which, let's be honest, every system has).

However, in this case I agree. This man isn't a criminal in the ordinary sense of the word. From the information you presented he's clearly mentally ill, and unless medical science has cured him since he killed people because of sandwiches, then he should be inside till he dies.

Care in the community in Britain, even in Scotland, has a great deal more to do with community and a lot less to do with care (another Thatcher idea to save money spent on ordinary people who should be self reliant in the adversity of mental illness).

If he is dependent on drugs, I wonder who will make sure he takes them.

  2. hi tris...
I don't think our sentencing should be set by European Courts. Have you seen the list of countries signed up to the ECHR ?
We should be able to set our sentencing and our laws in our own country.
And if you don't like the laws or sentencing rules then you can elect a new government and get the laws changed.
The majority of laws are now out of our control unfortunately. Set by an unelected elite.
I think Mr McCulloch has a girlfriend in Dundee so hopefully she will ensure he takes any medications that he's been prescribed. Although he may be cured of his tendency to cut off ears and murder people and so not be on any meds at the moment.
